The Center for Research and Training (CRT) at HHS 2 supervised the successful implementation of the Community Service Programme (CSP) for 11th Graders. Grade 11 students were given the task of examining the needs of disadvantaged Orphanage in Akkar inorder to provide services and support needed to improve the lives of little orphans. During November, representatives from Grade 11 visited the Orphanage and conducted Needs Assessment which they discussed with their peers when back to school. Thus, sub-committees were established whose aim was to cater for the various needs to successfully meet the requirements of the project. It was anticipated that 10.000 USD need to be raised and the priorites were as follows:
1- Buy a bus for the orphanage
2- Refurbish a room for little children play.
3- Refurbish a resource room for orphans to study in.
Students from Grade 11 launched a huge fund raising campaign and among the best supporters were 10th graders who thankfully conducted cake sales and contributed with the money they collected from these sales and that they got from their class associations. In addition Grade 6 students and Preschool Division supported fund raising by extensive cake sales. The Parent Teachers' Association (PTA) played a critical role at supporting the project by contributing to fund raising and to suggesting creative ideas as well.
Most importantly, all parents of HHS 2 dealt very positively with the project and were a big asset for its successful realization. hence a lump sum of 12,500 USD was raised in addition to large number of contributions in other forms such as discounts on purchased items, etc.....
Consequently, on Saturday, May 22, 2010; Grade 11 students visited the Orphanage and offered the following:
1- A bus whose capacity is 20 individuals.
2- Refurbished Play Rooms: 2 play rooms for children with green mats and new toys (seesaws, swings, baskets for basketball, etc...)
3- Refurbished Resource Room: 4 huge Library Tables; 32 chairs, 5 PCS, 5 closets with shelves for books, around 500 book and story, around 200 pieces of stationary, TV set with movable table, set of 6 taperecorders, 2 bulletin boards and 2 white boards. This room was dedicated for the memory of Mrs Sahar Hariri, Secondary School Supervisor who was part of the team who was working on this project and who passed away very sadly on May 13, 2010.
4- New Clothes and new toy for every child in adition to to the huge number of used clothes and toys collected by students.
5- Utensils for the orphanage and some candy and chocolates.
CRT would like to thank each of the following for their contribution to the successful realization of the project:
1- Grade 11 students
2- Grade 10 Students
3- Grade 6 students.
4- Preschool Division.
5- Supervisors of all school levels.
6- Ms Ghina Amahaz, Ms Nada Akoum, Ms Suzan Kishli, Ms Dina Akkawi, Ms Rena Kawwas, Ms Nisrine Awarkeh and Mr Bilal Ghali.
7- Mr Amin Mohammadieh and members of the Physical Plant Department.
8- PTA at HHS 2.
9- ALL PARENTS of HHS 2 students.
10- Others who do not want their names to be enlisted!
Last but not least, special thanks go to Mrs Basima Baasiri for her support, encouragement and care. In fact, Mrs Baasiri, was the initiater of the whole idea and the one who depicted Akkar Orphanage for the execution of the CSP for Grade 11.
This has been a whole school project and relied mainly on the high cooperative spirit amongst various parties.
Thank you all !
